A recent test by the LSU AgCenter Food Incubator, comparing IQF Gulf menhaden to IQF Atlantic menhaden, found a significantly higher oil content in our local fish.  Key findings included:

Gulf Menhaden

  • Crude protein: 16.5%
  • Crude fat: 21.7%
  • Crude fiber: 0.16%
  • Moisture: 55.73%
  • Carbohydrate: 0.0%
  • Calorie content: 2613 kilocalories per kilogram

Atlantic Menhaden

  • pH: 6.14
  • Crude protein: 18.1%
  • Crude fat: 4.7%
  • Crude fiber: 0.018%
  • Moisture: 68.56%
  • Carbohydrate: 2.69%
  • Calorie content: 1254 kilocalories per kilogram
